A Novelty Fundraiser Tournament

Gordon Vail Bow PlatformThis novelty 3D Round includes 32 3D targets (instead of the usual 28 targets), with each participant allowed two arrows per target. The scoring system is 10-8-5, and the maximum score is 640.

* Rangefinders are not allowed during this unmarked 3d event.

Types of Bows Allowed

While this is an unmarked 3D Target shoot, with a variety of high-quality Rhinehart and Mackenzie targets specifically set up for traditional shooters in mind, there will be “one” Compound bow class for those shooting bows with “gears”.

Two arrows per target!

The San Diego Archers host four novelty shoots each year: The Flying Pig, Iron Turkey, King Arthur and Sir Gordon’s Trad Shoot. Each of these 3D shoots now include two arrows per target.

Target Ranges

As an unmarked shoot, you have to estimate the distance to the target yourself without the assistance of a range finder. This is a difficult and challenging aspect of these shoots, so don’t let your shooting partners know what you think the distance is!

  • For Adults, 15 yo or over, and Youths (under 15 yo), the longest distance  is 40 yards.
  • For Cubs, 11 yo & under, the longest distance is 25 yards.

About Mulligans and Doe Tags:

Mulligans.  A maximum of two mulligans may be purchased at registration for an additional $1 each. If you miss your target, a mulligan allows you to take another shot at a target. If you use a mulligan, your score is determined by that mulligan arrow, even if you score worse than the previous arrow. You may use the second mulligan on the same target.

Doe Tags.  There will be one and two buck-doe spreads in the field, where the doe placed between the buck and the archer. If you hit the doe and do not have a doe tag, you score -5 on the target. If you have a doe tag, you score zero. You cannot use a mulligan if you hit the doe, whether or not you have a doe tag. If you hit the buck or miss completely, you may use a mulligan and your score is determined from that second arrow.

Get ready, archers! The Sir Gordon Traditional 3D Shoot is just around the corner, and we’re excited to announce that it’s also our “SoCal Archery Clubs Appreciation Day”!

We’re inviting all archery clubs in southern California to join in the celebration. Bring along your club’s banner and proudly display it anywhere you like, inside or outside the practice range fence. It’s a fantastic opportunity to showcase your club’s spirit and camaraderie.

But that’s not all! We’re also offering a platform for you to share more about your club. If you’re interested, we’d love for you to say a few words during our safety briefing. It’s a great chance to tell us all about your club’s mission, achievements, and what makes it unique.

So, let’s come together to celebrate the sport we love and the clubs that make our archery community so vibrant. We can’t wait to see you there!

There is even a rumor that we’ll be providing a free BBQ lunch to all attendees (depending on the number of online registrations received).

This unique archery range sits on 30 acres in the heart of beautiful Balboa Park. The 163 Freeway to the west surrounds it, the San Diego Zoo to the north, and the Old Globe Theater and Museum of Us to the east.

Rube Powell Archery Range

The range’s entrance is on the south side of the Cabrillo Bridge (Laurel St.), near the SW corner of the Alcazar Garden Parking Lot.

 

The Balboa Range also has a small practice area at the entrance, with target butts at 10, 20, 30 and 40 yards.

The Balboa Range is open to the public from sunrise to sunset, 365 days/year, for just a $ 2-day use fee. 14 targets are open year-round (Targets #15-28).

The remaining targets are only open during tournaments, held twice each month on the 1st & 3rd weekends.

The first open target (#15) is on the north side of the Cabrillo Bridge, which is a 5-10 minute walk from the entrance/practice area (noted in the map above).

Each target has yardage markers (tabs) varying from 5 to 80 yards, depending on the target. This is a NFAA-certified course!

The Balboa Park Rube Powell Archery Range and the Morley Field Archery Range are both maintained by volunteers from the San Diego Archers (and non-members, too!)

New to San Diego, have questions about archery, ranges or need help?

The  San Diego Archers ranges are open to the public and membership with the San Diego Archers is not required to participate in tournaments. The San Diego Archers host four novelty tournaments each year. In addition, there are more than twenty regular competition tournaments throughout the year. Participants are only required to show up with their own gear, sign a waiver, and pay a small fee.

  • As a first-time visitor to the Rube Powell Balboa Park Archery Range, what should I know? The range is a walking course, similar to a golf course, so it’s important to always walk in the proper direction, counterclockwise along the path. There is also a map of the range available on the website for both desktop and mobile viewing.
  • White boardWhat is the process to register and pay for a San Diego Archers tournament online? There’s a link on the registration page of the website for the date you wish to attend. After registering, you should print a scorecard with a waiver, which you’ll need to score your round. Be sure to arrive on the tournament day by 8:00 am. Once you arrive, be sure to visit the target number reservation whiteboard, where you will write your name into the preferred starting target number box. If you have registered and paid online, and printed your scorecard and waiver for the tournament you do not need to visit the visitor’s table. Just be sure to drop your waiver into the black box at the visitor’s table before leaving the range.
  • Visitors TableIf I haven’t registered online, how can I register for a tournament on the day of the event? You should arrive by 8:00 am and go to the visitor’s table on the west side of the Alcazar Parking Lot. You’ll be asked to sign a paper waiver (you can bring your own signed waiver to save time), read the range safety rules, and pay the registration fee if not paid online. You’ll also be provided a scorecard at the visitor’s table. The fee for day-of-registration may be higher than the fee for preregistration.
  • SDA Pay PoleIs it possible to make a cash donation at the tournament? Yes, if cash is not accepted at the visitor’s table, you can donate at the red pay tube in the practice area. You can also donate online on the San Diego Archers Donation Options page.
  • Are there any specific rules or important points that shooters participating in a tournament should be aware of? Shooters should keep their group size to 5 or fewer persons. After shooting the last target, they should post their score online.
  • Do I need a reservation to shoot at your archery range? Both of our ranges are public archery ranges, open from sunup to sundown. No reservations are required. We only ask that you donate $2 per person online or at the pay poll when you arrive.
