A wide range of high-quality Rhinehart and Mackenzie targets are set in various hunting scenarios. Only one arrow per target is allowed unless mulligans have been purchased. A maximum of two mulligans and one or two doe tags may be purchased at registration for an additional $1 each.

3D Target Shoot

Scoring: 10-8-5
Maximum Score: 280

Mulligans and Doe Tags:

If you missed or scored low with the first arrow, a mulligan allows you to take another shot at a target. If you use a mulligan, your score is determined by that second arrow, even if you score worse than the first arrow.

You may use a second mulligan on the same target. Your score is determined by the last arrow shot.

There will be 1 or 2 buck-doe spreads in the field, where the doe placed between the buck and the archer. If you hit the doe and do not have a doe tag, you score -5 on the target. If you have a doe tag, you score zero. You cannot use a mulligan if you hit the doe, whether or not you have a doe tag.

If you hit the buck or miss completely, you may use a mulligan and your score is determined from that second arrow.

Traditional Stakes for Recurve and Longbows Shooters

Longer range targets will have a traditional stake (orange cone) set (per NFAA rules). Orange cones are designated for Youth and Traditional archers with a maximum distance of 40 yards.

Distances:

For Young Adults (14-17 yo) & Adult (18+): The longest distance is 50 yards (occasionally a longer shot or two is set up to challenge you).

The Field Round includes:
28 2D Paper Field Targets
4 Arrows per Target
Maximum Score: 560

The Field Round is a field archery tournament of 28 2D paper targets, firing 4 arrows per target from WHITE colored stakes for a total of 112 arrows. There are 3 scoring zones on each target. Each arrow scores either 3 points for the black outer ring, 4 for the white middle ring or 5 the black bull’s eye. There is a center X ring to the inner 5 point zone.

Field Target

Add up each arrow’s score to give a total score out of a maximum 560.

Field Rounds are at ‘even’ (5 yd) distances up to 80 yards, with the shortest distances measured in feet.

Targets may have different shooting positions:

1) All four arrows shot from one marked stake.

2) “Fan”: Each arrow shot from a different marked stake spread in a fan pattern, with each stake at the same distance to the target.

3) “Walk Up”: Each arrow shot from a different marked stake at decreasing distances to the target. For example, one arrow each at 45, 40, 35, 30 yards, or two arrows each at 45 and 40 yards.

For Youths:

  • Under 15, the longest distance is 50 yards.
  • For Cubs, under 12, the longest distance is 30 yards.

Entry Fee:

NEW! Season Opener 3D – 12 August 2018

NEW BONUS SHOOT THIS WEEKEND!!
The Season Opener 3D
Presented by San Diego Muleys (@sandiego_muleys)
with donations from the Bow and Arrow Shop and
Hosted by The San Diego Archers
This Sunday, August 12, 2018
At the Balboa Park Rube Powell Archery Range

Entry Fee:
$5  for Active-Duty Military
$10 for SDA members
$15 for non-members.

The Season Opener, happening this Sunday at The Rube at Balboa, will have instructions posted at every shot (28 targets). Most targets will allow rangefinders. There will be some hard-angled shots, a few timed shots, two steel targets, a shot with a 30-second hold, several shots in the 40-60 yard range, and one shot at approximately 80 yards. Start shooting when you show up at anytime between 0630-0930 am. Group sizes will be no less than 3 and no more than 4, so don’t plan on waiting for a group of 12 to shoot at a target. If you are a solo shooter, we will put you in with a good group.

Because there are no divisions in hunting, there will only be two divisions…. Men’s open, and women’s open. If you actively hunt, and have a hunting license, register as so at the Range entrance, and you will be eligible for the prizes for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd in both divisions. Non-hunters are eligible to win the prizes for the two steel target shots, which includes a Glendel Full Rut Buck 3D target for the 45 yard steel target (35 yards for trad).

The scoring is as follows… any deer or elk target will score X… 10… 8…. 0…. any shot outside the vitals is a ZERO (see scoring for the two steel targets below).

Coyotes and the big kitties will score normal with the X-10-8-5-0.

Steel targets will score 25 points for a clean shot with a shootable retrieved arrow. Steel targets will have a foam target option if you do not want to shoot the steel target.

In the hopes of creating a fun shoot for all, the goal of @sandiego_muleys is to get hunters out to the course to make sure that they are ready to take an ethical shot, or practice ethical behavior and not take the shot when it comes down to the real thing. So, hunter or not, come out this Sunday, and let’s hope y’all don’t break any arrows!

For any additional info, please contact Travis at sandiegomuleys@gmail.com, or by phone at 858-414-2247. And if you are a deer hunter, follow @sandiego_muleys on Instagram.

PRINTABLE FLYER HERE!

NOTE! PLEASE COME PREPARED!! San Diego Muleys (aka: Travis Bowman) has put this entire shoot together with VERY GENEROUS donations from Bruce Marshall, owner of the Bow and Arrow Shop in Lakeside, with the San Diego Archers hosting the event. Since this is the very first Season Opener, we don’t know what the turnout will be, but it could be huge. Please bring water, snacks, sunscreen, hat, etc. and plenty of patience! If this is a big hit (and it already sounds like it), it will be an annual event. We will have water available throughout the range, but no food. (The closest available food is ~5 minutes walk at the Mingei Museum, Japanese Friendship Garden & Museum of Art-Panama 66 Cafe).

  Have fun, Everyone!!!
