THE FLYING PIG 3D SHOOT
~Range Finders Allowed~

If you know anything about the local flora and fauna of the Balboa Park area of San Diego, you will be aware of not only the existence but also the migratory patterns of the Pink Lesser Spotted Rhinehart Flying Pig.

For those of you who are less familiar with this legendary exodus, all indications point to the migration beginning on Sunday, February 3rd, 2019, starting at 9:15 am and lasting until around noon. During this time we anticipate that each person will get at least one chance to shoot at this unusual creature during its majestic flight across the Balboa Park skies (plus 27 other targets)!

So, get out your bows and start practicing! Registration for this range finder-approved novelty 3D event starts at 7:00 am.

This is a 28 target, 2 ARROW per target, novelty 3D shoot. You’ll find the Pink Lesser Spotted Rhinehart Flying Pig and a wide range of other high-quality Rhinehart and Mackenzie targets set at unmarked yardages in various hunting scenarios.

3D SHOOT DETAILS

* Scoring: 10-8-5 (Flying Pig scoring: 25-20-16-10)

      * Maximum Score: 590
      * Mulligans & Doe Tags ($1 each):
If you missed or scored low with the first or second arrow, a mulligan allows you to take another shot at a target.  If you use a mulligan, your score is determined by that mulligan arrow, even if you score worse than the original arrow.  You may use a second mulligan on the same target.

There will be 1 or 2 buck-doe spreads in the field, where the doe is placed between the buck and the archer.  If you hit the doe and do not have a doe tag, you score -5 on the target. If you have a doe tag, you score zero.  You cannot use a mulligan if you hit the doe, whether or not you have a doe tag.  If you hit the buck or miss completely, you may use a mulligan and your score is determined from that mulligan arrow.

FLYING PIG MULLIGANS
Additional mulligans may be purchased for the Flying Pig! ($1 each)

Animal Round – January 20, 2019

Animal Round
The San Diego Archers
Will host the Animal Round
This Sunday, January 20, 2019
At the Balboa Park Rube Powell Archery Range

Registration opens at 7:30 am
Registration Closes at 8:45 am
Shoot begins at 9 am

The Animal Round includes:
28 2D Paper Field Targets
1-3 Arrows per Target
Maximum Score: 588
No Rangefinders allowed

Animal Rounds use 2D paper targets with ‘uneven’ distances between 5 and 60 yards, reminiscent of the Hunter Round. The rules and scoring are significantly different.

The archer begins at the first YELLOW shooting stake of the target and shoots the first arrow. If it hits, you do not have to shoot again. If it misses, you advance to the second shooting stake and shoot the second arrow, then, to the third shooting stake for a third shot, if needed.

Animal Target

The best score per target is 21
Maximum Score: 588

There are 3 scoring zones: Bonus Kill Zone, Kill Zone, and Hit Zone.

Scoring is based on where you hit and with which arrow.

The first arrow shot is scored 21, 20 or 18. The second arrow is scored 17, 16 or 14, and the third arrow is scored 13, 12 or 10. A scoring chart is included on your scorecard.

For Youths:

  • Under 15, the longest distance is 50 yards.
  • For Cubs, under 12, the longest distance is 30 yards.

Unmarked 3D Round
The San Diego Archers
Will host the 3D Round
This Sunday, January 6, 2019
At the Balboa Park Rube Powell Archery Range

Registration opens at 7:30am
Registration Closes at 8:45am
Shoot begins at 9am

The 3D Round includes:
28 3D targets
1 Arrows per Target
Maximum Score: 280
No Rangefinders allowed

A wide range of high-quality Rhinehart and Mackenzie targets are set in various hunting scenarios. Only one arrow per target is allowed unless mulligans have been purchased. A maximum of two mulligans and one or two doe tags may be purchased at registration for an additional $1 each.

As an unmarked shoot, you have to estimate the distance to the target yourself without the assistance of a rangefinder. This is a difficult and challenging aspect of these shoots, so don’t let your shooting partners know what you think the distance is!

Scoring: 10-8-5
Maximum Score: 280

Mulligans and Doe Tags

If you missed or scored low with the first arrow, a mulligan allows you to take another shot at a target. If you use a mulligan, your score is determined by that second arrow, even if you score worse than the first arrow.

You may use the second mulligan on the same target. Your score is determined by the last arrow shot.

There will be 1 or 2 buck-doe spreads in the field, where the doe placed between the buck and the archer. If you hit the doe and do not have a doe tag, you score -5 on the target. If you have a doe tag, you score zero. You cannot use a mulligan if you hit the doe, whether or not you have a doe tag.

If you hit the buck or miss completely, you may use a mulligan and your score is determined from that second arrow.

Range Finder-Allowed Guest Category

We now allow Range Finders in a separate category. Range Finders will not be allowed in groups competing in the Unmarked 3D category. The high score for Compound and Traditional Range Finder Guests will be announced, but no awards will be given.

Traditional Stakes for Recurve and Longbows Shooters

Longer range targets will have a traditional stake (orange cone) set (per NFAA rules). Orange cones are designated for Youth and Traditional archers with a maximum distance of 40 yards.

For Youths:

  • For Youths (12-14 yo), the longest distance is 40 yards.

  • For Cubs (11 yo & under), the longest distance is 25 yards.
