Sir Gordon Traditional Shoot Results! 30 July 2017

Congratulations to Mike Heisler (Adult Male Recurve)!
Top score of the shoot: 494
NOTE: New format this year! 32 targets and TWO arrows per target (instead of one arrow/28 targets), so max points were 640 (not 280).

(Honorable mention to our wheelie friends. No awards were given, but, WOW, David Holmburg shot 636 + 31 X’x and Mark Omel shot 632 + 37 X’s, out of 640 & 64 X’x possible. Well done, guys!)

In honor of our most valuable, Member Emeritus Sir Gordon Vail, we had another great turnout and everyone really enjoyed the two arrows/target treat! (FYI: because of all the positive feedback we are considering adding more 2-arrow 3D shoots to the calendar)

A giant THANK YOU to the visiting archers from Pasadena Roving Archers and other CA clubs. It was great to see you all again!

See you next year!

32 3D targets: 640 total points and 64 X’s possible.
Turnout: 80 archers, 77 scorecards turned in.
55 traditional archers and 22 archers with “training wheels”  😉

Sir Gordon Traditional Shoot – 30 July 2017

Sir Gordon Traditional Shoot

The San Diego Archers
Will host the Sir Gordon Traditional Shoot
This Sunday, July 30, 2017
At the Balboa Park Rube Powell Archery Range

Registration opens at 7:30am
Registration Closes at 8:45am
Shoot begins at 9am

The Sir Gordon Traditional Shoot includes:
32 3D Targets
2 Arrow per Target
Scoring: 10-8-5
Maximum Score: 560
No Rangefinders allowed

This is an Unmarked 3D Target shoot. All you compound bow shooters, dust off your longbows & recurves. Get out and do it like it should be done!

There will be one Compound bow class for those who haven’t got a REAL Bow.

A wide range of high-quality Rhinehart and Mackenzie targets are set in various hunting scenarios.

"Bowman Platform"NEW THIS YEAR!!
Thanks to great feedback from fellow archers throughout California, we have increased the number of targets from 28 to 32 and from one arrow per target to two arrows per target!

Two arrows per target at 32 targets!!

A maximum of two mulligans and one-two doe tags may be purchased at registration for an additional $1 each.

As an unmarked shoot, you have to estimate the distance to the target yourself without the assistance of a range finder. This is a difficult and challenging aspect of these shoots, so don’t let your shooting partners know what you think the distance is!

About Mulligans and Doe Tags:

If you missed or scored low with the first arrow, a mulligan allows you to take another shot at a target. If you use a mulligan, your score is determined by that second arrow, even if you score worse than the first arrow. You may use the second mulligan on the same target. Your score is determined by the last arrow shot.

There will be 1 or 2 buck-doe spreads in the field, where the doe placed between the buck and the archer. If you hit the doe and do not have a doe tag, you score -5 on the target. If you have a doe tag, you score zero. You cannot use a mulligan if you hit the doe, whether or not you have a doe tag. If you hit the buck or miss completely, you may use a mulligan and your score is determined from that second arrow.

  • For 15 years and older, the longest distance is 40 yards.
  • For Youths (12-14 yo), the longest distance 40 yards.
  • For Cubs (11 yo & under, the longest distance is 25 yards.

Entry Fee:
$10 for SDA members & Active Duty Military
$15 for non-members.

Please arrive at the Balboa Park Archery Range with plenty of time to register.

Paper shoots may be canceled due to heavy rain (Animal, Hunter, Field Rounds).
3D Shoot are NOT canceled because of bad weather!

Volunteer Work Party-This Saturday, July 22, 2017

Range Preparation for the Sir Gordon Traditional Shoot!
This Saturday, July 22, 7am to ~noon
Rube Powell Archery Range

Please come help us prepare for our Annual Sir Gordon Traditional Shoot (on July 30) by cleaning up the Balboa Park Rube Powell Archery Range. Our goal for this work party will be general clean up (clearing weeds & leaves), checking target bales, yardage markers, etc. If you have noticed anything in particular that needs attention, please let us know!
Show up anytime after 7am! Bring gloves, water and a hat (long sleeves and pants are always a good idea). If you have a weed whacker or rake, bring them along. We have some rakes and shovels, too. Stay as long as you want – we plan to work until around noon.
Allison is hosting this event: she’s bringing COFFEE, BAGELS, DONUTS, and other goodies! Please RSVP by e-mailing her at allison.shearer@gmail.com so she can have enough snacks for everyone.
Volunteers get to shoot their next tournament for free!

The San Diego Archers truly appreciate your help!

Both archery ranges in Balboa Park are maintained by volunteer efforts alone. If each member (non-members welcome, too!) contributed just one hour of volunteer work on either range, we would have two of the nicest looking ranges in California.
