The San Diego Archers

This Sunday, July 29, 2018

Registration Closes at 8:45am

Swap Meet from 7am to ~2pm (details below)

Volunteers needed to help set up and take down targets!
Trad archers, here’s your chance to set up fun shots for all Trad shooters.
At nearly all past Sir Gordon Trad Shoots, our Compound buddies are the ones who show up early to set up the targets….then, Trad shooters moan about how far or difficult the shots were! Here’s your chance to contribute.
Parents, we hope you can help, too: We also want to be sure to set up Cub cones at every target for our up-and-coming champion archers!
If you aren’t able to help set up targets, help in taking down targets is very much appreciated, too!
Remember: Volunteers shoot for FREE!

The Sir Gordon Traditional Shoot includes:
32 3D Targets
2 Arrow per Target
Scoring: 10-8-5
Maximum Score: 640
No Rangefinders allowed

This is an Unmarked 3D Target shoot. All you compound bow shooters, dust off your longbows & recurves. Get out and do it like it should be done!

There will be one Compound bow class for those who haven’t got a REAL Bow.

A wide range of high-quality Rhinehart and Mackenzie targets are set in various hunting scenarios.

"Bowman Platform"Back By Popular Demand!!
Thanks to great feedback from fellow archers throughout California, we have increased the number of targets in the Sir Gordon Trad Shoot from 28 to 32 and from one arrow per target to two arrows per target!

SDA Novelty 3D Format: Two arrows per target !! The San Diego Archers host four novelty shoots each year: The Flying Pig, Iron Turkey, King Arthur and Sir Gordon’s Trad Shoot. Each of these 3D shoots now include two arrows per target. All other monthly 3D shoots remain at one arrow per target.

Distances: As an unmarked shoot, you have to estimate the distance to the target yourself without the assistance of a range finder. This is a difficult and challenging aspect of these shoots, so don’t let your shooting partners know what you think the distance is!

  • For 15 years and older, the longest distance is 40 yards.*
  • For Youths (12-14 yo), the longest distance 40 yards.
  • For Cubs (11 yo & under, the longest distance is 25 yards.*FYI: for Adults, there might be one or two longer shots, because some of our Trad Shooters really like to challenge themselves. If the Adult cone is set at over 40 yards, Trad Shooters may shoot from the Youth Cones.

About Mulligans and Doe Tags:

Mulligans:  A maximum of two mulligans and one-two doe tags may be purchased at registration for an additional $1 each.
If you missed or scored low with either of your two arrows, a mulligan allows you to take another shot at a target. If you use a mulligan, your score is determined by that mulligan arrow, even if you score worse than the previous arrow. You may use the second mulligan on the same target.

Doe Tags:  There will be 1 or 2 buck-doe spreads in the field, where the doe placed between the buck and the archer. If you hit the doe and do not have a doe tag, you score -5 on the target. If you have a doe tag, you score zero. You cannot use a mulligan if you hit the doe, whether or not you have a doe tag. If you hit the buck or miss completely, you may use a mulligan and your score is determined from that second arrow.

Entry Fee:
$10 for SDA members & Active Duty Military
$15 for non-members.

Please arrive at the Balboa Park Archery Range with plenty of time to register.

Note: As with all 3D Shoots – We will shoot come rain or shine.

Other archery events to choose from are a new prep for deer hunting: the Season Opener 3D Round, a long-awaited SWAP MEET, a Royal Archery Tournament, and, of course, the Tuesday League continues, come join the Friday Night Lights at Morley and the monthly Alpine 3D Shoot! Phew! So much to choose from!

ONGOING:
Wounded Warrior Battalion Archer Clinics
Mondays, ~10am-noon, (except Federal holidays)
Morley Field Archery Range.

The San Diego Archers supports the Wounded Warrior Battalion Archery Clinic by providing volunteer instructors, maintenance of existing archery equipment, archery range use and, of course, our donation of $4000 from the Flying Pig 3D Fundraiser to buy new equipment & supplies for the program! The Monday morning clinics are always looking for more volunteers to fill in as current volunteers move away or take on new jobs. You don’t need to be a Level II Coach, just be enthusiastic about archery & share that enthusiasm with our Wounded Warriors. This is one of many Health & Wellness clinics offered through the USMC Warrior Athlete Reconditioning Program, held year-round (except Federal holidays) at the Morley Range. You don’t have to commit to every Monday, but if you have a free Monday morning, please join us. It is a very casual, yet incredibly rewarding program, especially when you watch someone who has never held a bow, keep signing up for the clinic, then showing up with their own equipment, then SDA Tournaments, then becoming an SDA family member! We are truly honored to be a part of this program. Contact: info@sandiegoarchers.com for more info.
