Unmarked 3D Round Results – 4 October 2020

Welcome Back to the SDA 3D Tournament!  It was great to see everyone get out in the fresh San Diego air to show us their skill with the stick and string.  Some impressive scores given our last tournament was 6 months ago.

THANK YOU for following the social distancing, wearing of masks and limiting shooting group sizes.

Your actions have helped protect yourself and others from exposure to the COVID virus.

We appreciate everyone who braved the new online registration processes and we look forward to your comments so we can improve our system.  Turnout was about half of normal numbers but considering this shoot was only recently approved, we feel the response was excellent.  Weather couldn’t have been better and the course was challenging yet fun with some very clever set ups for shots.  We will work on the timing for starting groups and get everyone on the field in an expeditious yet safe manner.

We encourage TRAD and Barebow shooters to help us set up the course so the shots meet your needs.  If you would like to volunteer in the future, let us know by sending an email to SanDiegoArchers@gmail.com and we’ll ensure you get details on where to be and at what time.

As a reminder, you can now submit a waiver, membership application and pay online.

Unmarked 3D Round – 4 October 2020

Unmarked 3D Round
The San Diego Archers
Will host the 3D Round
Sunday, October 4, 2020
At the Balboa Park Rube Powell Archery Range

Please review the how to register online page before attending this tournament.

Register onlineShoot times run from 7am to noon.

The 3D Round includes:
28 3D targets
1 Arrow per Target
Maximum Score: 280
No Rangefinders Allowed (however, if you like, you can shoot in the Guest (Open) class category below and use a rangefinder but you won’t be eligible for tournament awards and scores do not count towards end of year club totals.)

We use a wide range of high-quality Rhinehart and Mackenzie targets set in various hunting scenarios.  Only one arrow per target is allowed unless mulligans were purchased.  A maximum of two mulligans and two doe tags can be purchased at registration for $1 each.

As an unmarked shoot, you have to estimate the distance to the target yourself without the assistance of a rangefinder. This is a difficult and challenging aspect of these shoots, so don’t let your shooting partners know what you think the distance is!

Scoring: 10-8-5
Maximum Score: 280

Mulligans and Doe Tags

If you missed or scored low with the first arrow, a mulligan allows you to take another shot at a target.  Your score is determined by that second (mulligan) arrow even if your score turns out worse than the first arrow.

You could use the second mulligan on the same target but your score is determined by the last arrow shot.

There is a maximum of two buck-doe spreads in the field where the is doe placed between the buck and the archer.  If you hit the doe and do not have a doe tag, you score negative five (-5) points on that target.  With a doe tag, you score zero (0) points however you cannot use a mulligan if you hit the doe regardless of possessing a doe tag or not.

If you hit the buck or miss completely, you may use a mulligan and your score is determined from that second arrow.

Rangefinder-Allowed Guest (OPEN) Category

We now allow Rangefinders in a separate category.  Rangefinders will not be allowed in groups competing in the Unmarked 3D category.  The high score for Compound and Traditional Rangefinder Guests will be announced, but no awards will be given.

Traditional Stakes for Recurve Archers and Longbows Shooters

Longer range targets will have a traditional stake (orange cone) set (per NFAA rules).  Orange cones are designated for Youth and Traditional archers with a maximum distance of 40 yards.

Our younger shooters:

  • For Youths (12-14 yo), the longest distance is 40 yards.

  • For Cubs (11 yo & under), the longest distance is 25 yards.

2) “Fan”: Each arrow shot from a different marked stake spread in a fan pattern, with each stake at the same distance to the target.

3) “Walk-Up”: Each arrow shot from a different marked stake at decreasing distances to the target. For example, one arrow each at 45, 40, 35, 30 yards, or two arrows each at 45 and 40 yards.
