San Diego Archers Range Rules and Etiquette
Please help us review and follow the range safety rules below while visiting either the Balboa Park Rube Powell or Morley Field archery ranges.
Range safety is everyone’s responsibility.
If you see an unsafe act on either range, say loudly the words “Stop Shooting”, then immediately address the situation with all involved until the safety concern is resolved.
Health and Welfare
There will be no use of drugs, alcohol, or smoking while on the range.
Rules and Etiquette on the Range
- Safety First! If you observe unsafe behavior, report it immediately to info@sandiegarchers.com. Violating any of these regulations, or behavior deemed unsafe, may result in immediate eviction from the range.
Range Rules Are for Everyone’s Safety
- No Sky Drawing. See the picture above. Do not draw your bow above the horizontal line to ensure everyone’s safety on the range.
- No crossbows, slingshots, or other non-archery-related weapons are allowed. Please refer to the California Code of Regulations (Last Updated: August 6, 2014) for more information.
- No broadheads, practice broadheads, blunts, or hunting-style points are allowed. This is to prevent damage to the targets and ensure the safety of all participants.
- Keep arrows pointed downrange at all times. This helps maintain a safe shooting environment and prevents accidental injury. And when not shooting, keep arrows in the quiver.
- Always walk. Don’t run on the range.
- Shoot at posted target butts and use marked yardages only. This ensures proper target alignment and distances for accurate shooting.
- Do not move or alter targets. Targets are positioned for specific purposes, and any alterations may compromise safety or fairness. “Target Closed” signs are in place to further protect park visitors outside of supervised tournaments.
- Please do not litter. Remove all litter you bring in to help maintain a clean and respectful environment.
- Pay before shooting. Your $2 contribution helps maintain the archery range.
- All archers must shoot from the designated shooting line or target marker to ensure consistent shooting positions and safety.
- Shooting lanes and targets are designed for multiple shooters. Give fellow shooters plenty of space and never cross into their shooting lane with your body or equipment.
- To maintain the integrity of the targets, please attach tape or self-adhesive targets to cardboard or paper, rather than directly to carpet bales or face covers.
- Maximum of 6 arrows per archer to maintain a smooth shooting flow for everyone.
- No shooting of wildlife on the range.
Archery Range Etiquette Is All About Supporting and Encouraging Your Fellow Archers
- Allow only one arrow puller on a target at a time. Make sure no one is standing behind you. Stand to one side while pulling arrows from top to bottom to avoid accidents.
- When everyone has completed the round, ask, “Clear?” Wait for a response before walking downrange to retrieve your arrows. If you hear someone ask “Clear?” take a look around at other archers. If everyone is done shooting, respond “Clear” and move down range to retrieve arrows.
- If you need to leave your lane’s field of view to retrieve an arrow, post someone in front of the target butt as a signal to approaching archers that you are behind the target.
- For both safety and courtesy reasons, limit your time spent searching for lost arrows. This helps maintain a smooth flow of shooting for everyone.
- Never “backtrack” while on the walking course. Always stay on the numbered path leading to the next target to avoid confusion and ensure everyone’s safety.
- If you are leaving a target and see that vision may be limited for the archers following your group, say loudly the word “Clear” as you leave the target area.
- If the group behind you is shooting faster than your group, be courteous and allow the faster group to shoot through to the next target.
- Once you’ve finished shooting, remain quiet and allow your fellow archers time to concentrate on their shots until they’re completed.
- Always keep small children or pets within sight on the archery range to prevent accidents.
Remember, knowing and abiding by archery range etiquette and rules ensures a safe and enjoyable experience for everyone. If you have any further questions or need additional assistance, feel free to ask!
